Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics - Academic
The academic version of the CHIA certification was launched in 2012. There were 50 universities involved in the pilot program and nearly 400 students received the “CHIA” designation.
Universities that are interested are required to send at least one professor to a Train the Trainer session. There is no charge for this workshop to members of the STR SHARE Center. Professors are also able to receive the CHIA certification. A schedule of upcoming TTT sessions is available.
The certification is based upon four core content areas:
- Hotel Industry Analytical Foundations
- Hotel Math Fundamentals – the metrics used by the Hotel Industry
- Property Level Benchmarking (STAR Reports)
- Hotel Industry Performance Reports (Trends, P&L, Pipeline, and Destination Reports)
A detailed outline of the training content, a list of learning objectives, and a sample exam are all available. Training programs, application exercises, and additional resources that professors can use to present the certification material are available to schools that are members of the STR SHARE Center. Schools are presenting the certification content to students in a variety of formats including Lodging Operations classes, Revenue Management classes, Capstone classes, stand-alone labs, and workshops.
The cost of the certification for the student is $75. Need-based scholarships will be considered. The exam is administered by the AH&LEI. There are 50 questions on the exam and a minimum score of 70% must be obtained. Retakes are available. Qualifying students receive a certificate of accomplishment and the ability to use the CHIA designation on their resumes or CVs. Their names and schools are also recorded on the AH&LEI website.
